Outside the northern gate of the Yichang prefecture, on the main road leading to the Nanjin Pass, a young man wearing a sandal hat and black pants stood under a large roadside tree, the front edge of the hat pressed down so low, and at the same time a large black scarf tied around his neck, that even his lower forehead could not be easily seen. By the young man's side stood an ebony horse, with a long leather pouch hanging from its saddle, but it was not known what was in the pouch, for it was long and narrow, and was probably not a blanket or clothing. It was noon on a February day, and the sun was so hot that the leaves and grass were almost on fire, but the young man was by no means cooling himself, for he looked from time to time up the road to the Yichang end, and with a certain impatience he was doubtless waiting for some character.
